Ben Affleck Ban: Removed From Casino After Counting Cards

Ben Affleck BanThanks to certain books and movies, card counting is something that the general public knows a little bit about on some level. It’s a strategy for blackjack that involves keeping up with what the composition of the remaining cards is like, while people can be banned from casinos for using the strategy, there is absolutely nothing illegal about it. Late last week, people were amazed to hear about the Ben Affleck ban from the Hard Rock Casino after he was accused of counting cards in blackjack games.

Why the Ben Affleck Ban Matters

Casinos can’t keep people from counting cards on the basis of saying that they are cheating because it’s a legitimate and completely valid strategy that only uses the normal information of the game to make a decision. The reason that casinos remove players who seem to be counting is that there’s really nothing that can be done to keep those players from getting an advantage against the casino in those blackjack games. These players frequently refrain from playing games with a house advantage, so it’s in the casino’s best interests to just ban the player and be done with it.

How Card Counting Works

There’s a big misconception about how card counting works in general. It doesn’t require you to have a photographic memory, and you don’t have to be some type of super genius to pull it off. All it involves is keeping up with a running total. In most systems, you start with zero and add or subtract to that total depending on which cards come. In the Hi-Lo system that most people start with, you will add one for any two, three, four, five or six that is dealt, and you will subtract one for every ten card or ace that is dealt.

Before you get any ideas about using this strategy in online casinos, there’s a catch. This strategy requires for the shoe to be dealt down most of the way to be effective. In online blackjack games, the shoe is shuffled after every hand, and this makes card counting useless.
