Random Number Generators Used in Online Gambling

number generator All online gambling games include some sort of chance element. When you’re playing against the house, or when you’re playing against other players on software provided by the house, the integrity of this randomization is extremely important because it helps to make sure that the games are fair and that no kind of cheating can happen. A lot of people are skeptical of the ability for a computer program to do things like shuffle a deck of cards in a fashion that is at least as random as a human shuffle, but technology allows us to do a lot more than just shuffle a deck of cards to protect the fairness of a game.

Online Casino Random Number Generators

Also known as an RNG for short, the random number generators used at online casinos are a key component of the operation. If you want to understand how randomization works, then you can start at the beginning and work forward to the methods used in present day games.

If you take a beginner’s programming class, then the first type of randomization that you will used is based on time. Each computer has a system clock that counts down to small fractions of a second, and this time is constantly moving forward. If you need to pull a random value for your program, you can use milliseconds (one-thousandth of a second) as what’s called a seed value. This seed value is what generates random numbers for you. For a beginner’s first few programs, this is random enough to understand key coding concepts, but it’s not enough for online gambling games.

Finding Stronger Seed Values for the RNG

Some really smart people figured out that there are tons of different sources of randomization that are just out there in the world waiting to be measured, and if you combine several of those together, then you create a randomization source that is of an extremely high quality. For a couple of examples of seed values, consider the temperature inside of a computer fan measured down to the ten-thousandth of a degree or the number of pixels that all the players’ computer mice have moved in the past minute. Not only do these values change wildly, but they’re also essentially impossible for someone to capture for predicting future events in casino games.

The Continuous Randomization

One potential problem that can happen with a random number generator is that the values are somehow captured after the randomization has occurred but before the betting event takes place. For example, in a casino poker game, a player in some hypothetical insecure scenario might be able to pull the information containing the dealer’s cards after the deal. One way to combat this is with the idea of a continuous shuffle or continuous randomization.

Suppose you have a blackjack game with a six-deck shoe. Normally in a live environment, the cards are all shuffled together and then left sitting in the same order while the game plays out. One way to prevent anyone from reading this information electronically in the online environment would be to have the shoe constantly shuffle itself based on randomized seed values like the ones discussed above. This helps to protect the players and the house from unfair scenarios with a more robust random number generator.
