United Kingdom Gambling Regulations Start Heating Up

United Kingdom Gambling RegulationsIn the United Kingdom, there’s a much more open policy towards gambling and advertising it than there are in many other parts of the world, including the United States. Because of this, there are often discussions about the regulations that handle how gambling is dealt with. There are a number of important issues at stake including protecting people with compulsive gambling, protecting against underage gambling and making sure that fair business practices are being adhered to. With a recent move in United Kingdom politics, it looks like things are going be heating up soon regarding these regulations.

Big Moves Regarding United Kingdom Gambling Regulations

Maria Miller is the Culture Secretary for the United Kingdom. Just less than a week ago on February 28, the Association of British Bookmakers came together and adhered to a voluntary code that set certain standards on protecting players. The main addition with this code was to allow players to self-regulate with time and spending limits on certain kinds of betting terminals. This allows people to plan out ahead of time how much they want to spend and how much time they want to use at these terminals, and this is a major factor in helping to prevent problem gambling.

However, Miller doesn’t think that this is enough, and she’s calling for more action. She’s proposed that the now-voluntary code be forced into part of the requirements for getting a UK gambling license. On top of that, she wants forced limits on how much time and money are spent on these terminals.

A Disconnect From Reality

One of the major problems with Miller’s suggestions is that they largely amount to added regulation with no added benefit. If you set one standard limit across the board for the amount of money spent on terminals, for example, then it’s unfair to people who would want to bet more because they have more money to spend well within their budget. On top of that, for extremely low income punters, it wouldn’t really help them if they had problem gambling issues at all.
