Sheldon Adelson Fails in Newest Anti-Online Gambling Bid

Sheldon AdelsonIn the online gambling world, Sheldon Adelson is known for strongly protesting the interests of his land-based gambling businesses by doing everything he can to sabotage and stop online gambling legislation. Recently, he has been calling for a measure to be attached to a big spending bill in Congress that would have seen online gambling effectively made illegal on a federal level. This push was shot down by House Speaker John Boehner and others, but it’s worthy to note Boehner since he made a point to single out Adelson to a degree.

Why Sheldon Adelson Attacks Online Gambling

It’s not exactly news that Adelson has been on the war path against the expansion of online casinos every form in the United States. The reason for this is clear and simple: He wants to protect his business which primarily centers around land-based gambling establishments. It’s not an unreasonable thing for him to do on some degree, though another way to go about it would be to try to be the person who owns popular online casinos so that he can profit there as well, but that would require him to be a part of it on a national level to be effective.

States’ Rights Issues

Adelson is considered a conservative, and one tenet of conservative policy-making is that rights not granted specifically to the Federal government are states’ rights only. Along these lines, many conservatives feel that a federal ban on online gambling interferes with states’ rights, so they are reluctant to go after it. Anyone who backs this type of thing from a conservative stance would be cannon fodder in the next election.

The biggest enemy of online gambling in the United States right now is probably Sheldon Adelson. He has said before that he will spend as much as it takes to stop all online gambling on the Internet in the United States, and he’s been very serious about that so far.
