Possible Overhaul of NJ Online Casino License Requirements

NJ Online Casino LicenseWhen online casinos first started being offered in New Jersey, it was made certain that online casinos would be attached to land-based establishments for a number of purposes. One of these purposes was to make sure that there was experienced oversight from companies who were already familiar with the market on the land-based side of things. While the NJ online casino license process is already in place, there could be a minor overhaul of it coming up that would place tougher restrictions on how these operations are licensed.

NJ Online Casino License Changes

In short, the proposed changes would see online casino operators set up to have the same licensing process as land-based casinos. This maintains the requirement that each online site be partnered with a land-based casino, but it extends the requirements for the online casino itself in order for it to be licensed. What’s interesting about the timing of this change is that it comes almost exactly a year after online gambling was introduced in the state, and it’s not clear what purpose it would serve other than continuing to protect the interests of the land-based establishments.

Possible Agendas

So what is the agenda of the lawmakers proposing these changes? New Jersey gambling revenues have been on the decline for quite a while, and opening up online gambling is supposed to help with that. While it has been contributing, it hasn’t been able to keep up with the decline of land-based facilities. This means that we should first think about how these changes could affect the overall level of gambling revenues.

Chances are that it’s an attempt to make the online gambling establishments look more legitimate. With online poker in particular, having bigger player pools is really important, and intrastate games is one of the only ways to make that happen. By making their online operators look more legitimate, they have better chances of scoring deals with other states in the future who decide to get in on the action.
