New Jersey Sports Betting Blocked by Federal Judge

There has been a big debate in the United States recently over the topic of sports betting. New Jersey sports betting has recently been shut down, yet again, by a federal judge after the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB came together to legally challenge the bill. Governor Christie recently signed a new bill into law, and it’s been put on hold by this federal blockage. It’s a very complicated issue that ties in with online sports betting in the United States and the big push to stop any sort of expansion of betting in that particular area.

What Made This New Jersey Sports Betting Law Different

A few key pieces of information are at the core of what this NJ sports betting law was all about. First, it got past a certain 1992 federal law by allowing casinos and racetracks to offer bets on events that happened outside of the state. Second, this comes after New Jersey was stopped from offering online sports betting in addition to the various types of online betting that they are currently offering with poker, casino titles and other games. It’s a complicated piece in a complicated puzzle to say the least.

Atypical Opposition

Sports betting expansion has a key piece of opposition that other types of betting does not have: sports leagues. These leagues fight hard against the expansion of sports betting because they believe that money that would otherwise be spent on sports-related items would be spent on sports betting. The idea is that they are fighting for their own profits, and while it’s hard to say whether they are correct or not, it’s hard to deny that it’s a rational fight on that basis. That’s why so many sports leagues along with the NCAA are opposing the expansion of sports betting.

When you add in the fight over the online sector and the involvement of the Wire Act, things are looking pretty interesting with a lot of things happening to do with sports betting in the United States.
