New Jersey Sports Betting Appeal Declined

New Jersey Sports BettingIt goes without saying that the gambling laws in the United States can be confusing and tricky to say the least. New Jersey has found this out the hard way after a recent appeal was declined by the Supreme Court. After the denial of this appeal, it’s looking like New Jersey sports betting won’t be happening anytime soon after all. The state has had a lot of momentum in getting their gambling economy back on the track of growth and profits, but the denial of this appeal is pretty huge.

New Jersey Sports Betting Shot Down

Back in 1992, the federal government passed a law that would make sports betting illegal except for states that were grandfathered in or that started up sports betting efforts inside of the next year after the law was passed. New Jersey sports betting didn’t start up then, so they are now banned from offering this type of wagering. Back in 2011, the voters in the state passed a referendum in favor of sports betting, and after a lot of legal maneuvering, the Supreme Court essentially shot it down after the Obama administration and a number of sports leagues complained.

The Alleged Integrity of the Games

Sports leagues are the most vocal opponents of sports betting because they feel like it offers an incentive for players and referees to be dishonest to try to throw games to make money. Match-fixing is a pretty big deal in sports betting markets all over the world, and while tons of people are caught each year, it’s virtually impossible to catch everyone. The Obama administration also chimed in with their opinion that the sports leagues were right.

The problem with this approach is that betting is allowed in Las Vegas and a few other places, so there’s no way to protect the leagues from betting in the first place. From there, it doesn’t make any sense for the leagues to try to block sports betting in the state of New Jersey, but what’s done is done.
