The foundation of strategy in this game is to avoid falling into a common trap: The three-card hands do not work the same way as the five-card ones. In Tri-Card Poker, you and the dealer are only given three cards to make hands. In order of strength from weakest to strongest, the hands are: high-card hands, one pair, flush, straight, three of a kind, straight flush, and royal flush (AKQ). You might want to keep these hands on a notecard if they aren’t listed on the table of the game you’re playing because they are in a very atypical order compared to the traditional five-card poker hand rankings.

Making Your Bets

There are several different types of bets that you can make in Tri-Card Poker. For the most part, however, you’re going to want to stay away from the side bets because they have a very high house advantage compared to the normal part of the game where you make a bet and decide if you want to play the hand or not. Essentially, you’re deciding if you want to raise or fold in the main portion of the game.

If you have a pair or better, you’re always going to play it. Along these lines, if you have ace-high or king-high, you will always play it. Always fold with jack-high or lower, and only play with queen-high if it’s Q6-high with a 4 kicker or better. If you have Q6-high with a 3 kicker or lower, then it’s time to fold and move on to the next hand.
