Playing the Hard Way in Craps Made Easy

hardwayincrapsCraps is known for having a ton of different possible bets, and it’s a real pain to try to keep up with all of them. However, some bets are more popular than others, and rolling numbers the hard way is one of those phrases that has made its way into popular culture. Along these lines, a lot of people are curious to know what betting the hard way involves and whether or not it’s a bet they should play. We want to introduce you to these bets in an easy way and give you an idea about whether or not you should play craps with them.

Rolling Numbers the Hard Way in Craps

There are four numbers that fall under what are considered the list of six place numbers. Those numbers are four, six, eight and ten. Each of these numbers can be rolled with what’s known as the easy way and what’s known as the hard way. The hard way always means that they are going to be made with the same number on each of the two dice, and the easy way always means that they are going to be rolled with different numbers on each of the two dice. For example, a hard six would be rolled with a 3-3 combination while an easy six could be rolled with a 1-5 or 2-4 combination.

The Payouts and How the Bets Work

When you place a hard way bet, you are betting that your number is rolled the hard way before it’s rolled the easy way and before a seven is thrown. Betting on a hard six or eight usually pays out at 9:1, and betting on a hard four or ten generally pays out at 7:1. This gives both bets a house advantage of about 2.78 percent per roll.

Sometimes you’ll find better odds of 9.5:1 and 7.5:1 using what’s known as the New Zealandn payouts for these bets, and they both have a 1.39 percent house advantage per roll in this case. Overall, the hard way bets have a higher house advantage than a lot of other bets in craps, but it’s still lower than the edge on some other bets.
