British Responsible Gambling Group Formed

responsible-gambling-groupInside of the past month, a lot has been going on regarding online gambling in the United Kingdom. Certain political figures have been coming down hard on the industry lately in favor of different types of new forced protections on players. In response, different groups have been working on their own ways of handling these issues in an attempt to keep the government from getting involved with new regulations. A responsible gambling group has been created as a result.

New UK Responsible Gambling Group Created

The new group is called the IGRG which is short for the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling. There are several trade groups that work inside of the United Kingdom including the National Casino Forum, the Remote Gambling Association, the Bingo Association, the British Amusement and Catering Trade Association, and the Association of British Bookmakers. All of these groups will be coming together to be a part of the IGRG, and it’s looking like it could be the largest group cooperative for responsible gambling ever created.

Following the ABB’s Lead

Within the past month, the Association of British Bookmakers, one of the groups that are a part of the IGRG, came together to form a voluntary agreement for a number of things aimed at giving help to people who have compulsive gambling issues. For example, they voluntarily agreed that many fixed-odds terminals would give people the option to set spending limits and time limits on betting. In response, government officials came down hard wanting forced limits set by players before they were able to place wagers, and they wanted these things to be a part of the licensing process for online casinos in the United Kingdom.

The Problem With Too Much Legislation

One of the problems with legislation is that it prevents the industry from regulating itself. Things are much more meaningful when companies and other entities come together to form groups like the IGRG that agree to work together to help people. It’s a better deal and more effective than having the government shove potentially misguided regulation down their throats which can often do as much harm as good.
