Play for hands that are a low pair or better are easy to learn, and there are hardly any exceptions except for when you have exactly with no flush draw that you should keep the  instead of the low pair as you would in every other possible scenario with a choice between a low pair and an eight-out straight draw. Because of this, most of the exceptions come when you’re playing high card hands that do not have clear four-card draws.

Example Scenarios

Two cards to a royal are often seen as a strong hand if you don’t have at least a pair, but not all two-card combinations are the same relative to other possibilities. For example, the combination with no flush draw is better than all two-card royal combinations except for  because of all of the possible straights it can make. Along similar lines, the :qsh: combination with no flush draw is better than the royal flush pairings that include a , though it’s worse than the rest of them. In fact, the combination to a royal flush is terrible, and it’s the worst two-card combination that you’ll actually keep when you play.

Keeping up with the relative ranking of two-card hands is difficult, but these situations come up a lot relatively speaking. So if you want to be a highly-skilled Jacks or Better player, then it’s worth it to work on them quite a bit.
