Sheldon Adelson Anti-Gambling Campaign Heats Up

sheldon-adelsonSheldon Adelson is known for his anti-online gambling stance, and since he has the money to back up an aggressive campaign against the spread of online betting in America, this is something that warrants attention. At the moment, Adelson is in the process of gathering AG signatures that could lead to action by congress to help put an end to the rise of online gambling sites in this part of the world.

10 State Attorney Generals Jump On Board

As of this week, Adelson has already successfully collected the signatures of 10 state attorneys, which basically requests that congress take the necessary steps in order to declare online gambling illegal within the United States. The letter has already made it all the way to the State and House Judiciary committees, and while this is a big step, it is only one of the initial steps that Adelson plans to take on his way to fighting against online gambling. Basically, the end result will be to declare gambling illegal so that individual states won’t have the power to regulate it on their own.

Online Gambling Leads To Addiction

One of the reasons why Adelson is fighting so hard against the proliferation of online gambling in the US is because he believes that it might contribute to a rise in gambling addictions, and this is something that he hopes to address with this new venture.

Targeting The Right Audience

If Adelson wants to get results with his new venture, he is targeting the right people to accomplish his ends. Some of the biggest names attached to this campaign include Chris Koster from Missouri, Alan Wilson from South Caroline and Jon Bruning from Nebraska. These state attorneys are the people to talk to when it comes to anything associated with online gambling because they are topmost legal authorities within their given states, so they have the power to enforce online gambling regulations.

The Poker Players Alliance Push Back

If groups such as the Poker Players Alliance have anything to say on the matter, Adelson isn’t going to win without a fight. They have been working to target attorney generals of their own from as many states as they can to support state level gambling regulations. As of a few days ago, there have been more than 9,000 letters sent to state officials to try and combat the lobbying currently being done by Adelson and his supporters. The executive director of the PPA, John Pappas, has recently stated that while they understand 10 of the AGs have already made the decision to sign Adelson’s petition, they are hoping that more won’t follow suit. What is more, they are also hoping to change the minds of the AGs that already jumped on board.

At the moment, it seems that there is a tug of war happening between both sides, and it remains to be seen which one will win the final battle.
