Advanced and Less Common Roulette Bets

Roulette BetsIn the game of roulette, almost everyone starts out playing the most basic bets. They might play from the even money bets like odd, even, red, black, 1-18 and 19-36 to begin with since those are easy roulette bets to learn and understand. They have an intuitive feel, and they are clearly marked on the board. Some players who like a higher risk for a chance at a larger reward might also start off with the straight-up bets which pay out at 35:1 and have a long shot chance of winning that’s less than three percent. These two types of bets are the most common, but we’re going to introduce you to some more advanced and less common wagers that you can make in roulette.

The Bets Available With 11:1 Payouts

There are two different wagers that you can make in roulette that will have 11x payouts, and they both involve betting on three numbers at the same time. The first is called a basket bet, and it involves betting on zero along with two of 1, 2 and 3. You place this bet by putting it at the upper corner of 1 and 2 (or 2 and 3) so that the chip is covering both the zero and the other two numbers that you have wagered on.

A second bet with this payout can also be made on a row of three adjacent numbers that go horizontal across the board. This is called a street bet, and it requires that you place your chips on the outer edge of the three numbers that you want to bet on. For example, if you wanted to bet on the 7-8-9 street, then you would place your bets on the outer edge of the 7 or the 9 so that it covered no other numbers and was halfway off of the grid of numbers entirely.

The Mid-Range Roulette Bets

Three different bets are available for what is considered the mid-range of payouts. These wagers have higher payouts and a little more risk than the simple even money bets and the 2:1 column bets, and they give you more flexibility on how you want to spread the numbers that you are wagering on as well.

First up is a corner bet. This is a pretty intuitive bet to understand, and it’s a bet on four numbers that form a square. You place your bet on the corner or intersection between those four numbers, and it has a payout of 8:1.

In American roulette, you can place something called a top line bet. This is a bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. This bet is placed by putting your chips at the corner of 0 and 1 or 00 and 3 so that it’s touching no other numbers. This is the worse bet available in any type of roulette, and even though it pays out at 5:1, it has a horrible 7.9 percent house advantage compared to the 5.3 percent house advantage of every other possible American roulette wager and the 2.7 percent house advantage of every possible European roulette wager.

The most common and most popular mid-range bet is the six line. This is like a street bet on two adjacent rows of numbers, and to place this bet, you put your chips on the outside corner between where you would place two different street bets. For example, if you wanted to place a six line bet on 31-32-33 and 34-35-36, then you would place your chips at the outside corner of 33 and 36 so that it was touching no other numbers on the grid. This bet pays out at 5:1, and that makes it a comfortable step up from the 2:1 column bets with a little more risk.
