Two Ways Royal Video Poker

It’s fairly well-known that most video poker games that do not use wild cards are generally seen as variations of Jacks or Better since that’s considered the most basic style of the game. Two Ways Royal is similar to Jacks or Better in that it doesn’t use wild cards, but it does add a new payout to the paytable. If you make a six-high straight flush that’s 6-5-4-3-2 of the same suit, then that counts as what’s called a “Lo Royal Flush” in this game, and that gets the same big 800x payout that the normal “Hi Royal Flush” of A-K-Q-J-T in the same suit gets.

The Payouts and House Advantage

There are two big advantages of playing this type of video poker. The first is that you can get a large payout rate of about 99.80 percent with correct play. The second advantage is that it’s a relatively simple game to learn compared to wild card games that have very complex strategies. In fact, Two Ways Royal is one of the easiest video poker games to learn how to play at a very high level.

Both the Hi Royal Flush and the Lo Royal Flush (essentially a six-high straight flush) pay out at 800x. A straight flush gets the typical 50x payout rate, and a four of a kind gets a 40x prize which is larger than the typical 25x given in non-wild card games. The rest of the paytable follows a standard 6/5 layout where you get 6x for a full house, 5x for a flush, 4x for a straight and so on. To qualify for a payout, you’ll need to make a final poker hand worth at least a pair of jacks.

Strategic Considerations for Two Ways Royal

The process of learning to play Two Ways Royal really well involves two basic steps. First, you will need to learn the basic strategies for Jacks or Better since that is the game that Two Ways Royal is based on. Next, you’ll need to incorporate a few key adjustments that take into consideration the new Lo Royal Flush hand. Generally speaking, most of your atypical decisions in this game will be based around that new hand in particular.

Most video poker fans are aware of the fact that if you have a made flush in non-wild video poker games, then you should always break that flush and draw for a royal if you have four cards to do it with. For example, with AQJT4 all in spades, you should discard the four and go for the royal draw even though you have already made a good hand.

This is the same kind of thing that happens with Two Ways Royal and the Lo Royal Flush. If you happen to have something like T6542 all in hearts, then you should discard the ten and draw for the Lo Royal Flush. The exception to this is if you have 5432A all in the same suit because this counts as a five-high straight flush. This is similar to how you wouldn’t break a king-high straight flush (KQJT9) by discarding the nine to draw to a royal.
