Deuces Wild Video Poker – Single Hand

The most popular type of wild card is Deuces Wild video poker. This game is based on a 52-card deck where all of the twos are wild and substitute for whatever cards will give you the highest-paying combination. Because there are so many wild cards in this game (7.7% of the cards in the deck are wild), there are some atypical hands that you can make like five of a kind and a wild royal flush. The keys to doing well with this game are to pick the best paytables and to take into consideration the specifics of the paytable that you’re playing.

The Paytable Breakdown

Deuces Wild online video poker does not have a standard payout table, and you’ll often find different tables at casinos powered by different types of software. Thankfully, the correct strategies do not change very much at all between the different paytables, so you won’t have to make any major adjustments once you understand the hand rankings.

A natural royal flush is worth 800x on most games provided that you play with the maximum of five coins, and it’s basically a royal with no wild cards. Four deuces is the next-highest payout which is almost always 200x or 250x. The next three highest payouts are usually for a wild royal flush (a royal made with at least one deuce), five of a kind, and a straight flush. Microgaming offers payouts of 25, 16 and 13 for these three hands, and Playtech offers payouts of 25, 15 and 9. Though it seems that the Playtech payouts are worse, they make up for it with better payouts for the lower hands.

Overall, for single-hand Deuces Wild, you can get up to a 96.8 percent payout rate with Microgaming’s standard paytable and up to 98.9 percent with Playtech’s standard paytable.

Strategic Considerations

Strategy in Deuces Wild is broken up into two main sections. First is how to play with no wilds. You have to keep in mind that, unlike most non-wild card games, the lowest payouts in this game go to three of a kind, and this makes single-pair hands nearly useless. With that having been said, a pair is stronger than any draw except for three to a royal or four to a straight flush as long as you have no wild cards in your hand.

When you have exactly one wild in your hand, the correct strategies become much more interesting because you have so many more options on how to play. The main thing that will trip people up is how to play straight flush draws. You’ll have your deuce plus your three other drawing cards. If those drawing cards are all in a row with no gaps, then your straight flush draw is stronger than any made hand that’s a flush or lower. If those drawing cards have a single gap, then your straight flush draw is weaker than three of a kind.

If you have two or more wilds in your hand, then it’s pretty obvious how to play, and there are no anti-intuitive situations to worry about.
