When it comes to classic casino games, American roulette is a game that’s always in the conversation. This version of roulette is most popular in North America, and it’s seen a ton of action in almost every single online casino that has ever existed. The key feature that distinguishes American roulette from other forms of the game is the use of the full 0-36 number set on top of an additional green 00. There are several different ways to make bets that satisfy different risk-to-reward ratios in this game, and its flexible bets allow for the creation of a lot of different strategies.

Payout Rates and Bets to Avoid

Almost every single bet in American roulette will have the same payout rate. The only real differences are how often they win and what your payout rates are when you win. In effect, you can increase your reward by increasing your risk, or you can lower your risk by lowering your payouts accordingly.

With that having been said, there is one bet in particular that has a worse payout rate than all of the others, and it’s a bet that’s specific to American roulette. If you place your bet on the top-left corner of the number grid at the corner of the 1 spot and the 0 spot, then that is considered a bet on the 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. This is called a Top Line Bet, and it pays out at 6 to 1. The house advantage on this bet is an enormous 7.9 percent, and that’s a full time and a half of the size of the house edge on every other bet possible in the game.

Understanding the American Roulette Betting Options

There are several different types of bets in this game. New players will tend to stick to the bets marked on the table. You can bet on individual numbers for a chance at a 35x payout, or you can bet on what are called the evens bets for a shot at a 1x payout. The evens bets include the red, black, evens, odds, 1-18 and 19-36 spots. There are also bets marked on squared marked 2-to-1 that are a bet on a column of 12 numbers that, just like the name of the bet, pay out at 2 to 1.

Because all of these betting options (except for the top line bet) have the same house advantage, you’re encouraged to come up with your own strategies. One popular approach is to create a number of different prize tiers by stacking multiple bets. For a very basic example, you might take a $1 bet on red, a $1 bet on even and a $1 bet on 1-18. This creates several different possibilities for winning $3, winning $1, breaking even, losing $1 or losing $3. If you throw in a straight-up bet, then you add chances for a higher 35x jackpot type prize on top of the other tiers. The flexibility in betting is one of the biggest reasons why American roulette is so insanely popular.
