Aces and Faces – Single Hand

There are a lot of non-wild card video poker games out there that offer bonus payouts for specific hands, and Aces and Faces video poker is probably the most popular of those. This is an 8/5 game, and that means that a full house will pay out 8x and a flush will pay out 5x when you have the best possible paytables. To make up for the lost value that you would have with a regular 9/6 paytable, there are a lot of bonus payouts for different types of four of a kind hands. In particular, four aces or four of a face card will get a higher payout than usual.

Payouts with Aces and Faces

The paytable that you will want to look for is a 8/5 standard paytable with a 25x base four of a kind payout. There will be bonus payouts of 80x for four of a kind in aces and an additional bonus payout of 40x for any four of a kind in kings, queens or jacks. If you have this paytable, then you can achieve an extremely high 99.3 percent payout rate with correct play. Even if you make minor mistakes regularly, you’ll still end up with a payout rate of over 99 percent.

The lower half of the paytable has fairly normal payouts for non-wild games. You qualify for a payout with a pair of jacks or higher, and you get a 1x payout for those single pair hands. A 2x prize is given for two pair with a 3x payout for three of a kind. Straights are also paid 4x and typically do not suffer from a reduced payout like they do in some games. Just remember that if any of these payouts are lower on your game that you’re probably not getting the best deal possible.

Aces and Faces Strategic Considerations

Basic non-wild video poker strategy largely applies to this game with a few exceptions. Because you have bonus payouts for aces and face cards, single pair hands in those cards are a bit more valuable than usual. When you combine that with a slightly lower payout rate than average for a flush, a certain class of hands is created that is particularly difficult to play. Those hands are when you have to choose between a flush draw and a high pair with a hand like AA859 with a flush draw or JJT94 with a flush draw.

In typical online casino video without the bonus four of a kind payouts or lower flush payouts, you would take a high pair over a flush draw. The changes in Aces or Faces are only enough to change this strategy when you have a pair of aces. What this means for you is that you’re only going to choose a single pair over a flush draw if and only if that pair is of aces and if you don’t hold two or more high cards other than your aces. If your draw was AAQJ4, then you should actually draw to the flush because of the chances of catching a high pair. In a AA859 flush draw situation, however, you should ditch the draw and stick with the aces.
