Virtual Reality Casino on Deck for Microgaming

Virtual Reality CasinoDuring a recent trade show, Microgaming showcased a piece of technology that we believe is going to be the future of online gambling beyond the shadow of a doubt. This technology was a functioning roulette game in a virtual reality casino powered by Oculus Rift. In this demonstration, the user wears a headset and is transported to a roulette game hosted by a robot in space. This is a seemingly random setting for the game, but players are able to place bets, turn to watch the wheel spin and everything else using their own hands in the simulation.

The Future: A Virtual Reality Casino

There’s no doubt that this is the future of online gambling, and if we’re being honest, it’s not all that surprising that Microgaming is the first to showcase this type of technology since it seems like they’re always leading with innovation in this industry. However, it does raise a number of interesting issues.

The first issue is if this will allow online casinos to close the gap when it comes to the popularity of land-based venues. Online casinos have always had the disadvantage of not offering the full social environment and atmosphere of a brick-and-mortar gaming establishment, and this technology could go a long way towards helping them to do that. We could be witnessing the beginning of the official takeover of online gambling over land-based gambling.

Other Concerns

Other concerns have to do with the immersion aspect and what will be done to help prevent problem gambling rates from potentially increasing. Microgaming has done an excellent job making sure that people who exhibit compulsive gambling behaviors have plenty of options for getting help, and we’re sure that they’ll handle the virtual reality situation in a responsible way.

However, there are a lot of unanswered questions here, and it’s pretty scary to think about. On the other hand, it’s also very exciting to see where we’re going with this level of technology, and to this end, we’re very interested to see what comes next in the progression of this new technology.
