How the UK Gambling Filter Happened

Let’s make this clear: The filter wasn’t targeting gambling sites specifically. However, a lot of these sites were considered “too sexy” for exclusion from these filters, and this has led to a situation where players will have to contact their ISP to have the filter dropped to be able to access certain online gambling sites. This is a pretty ridiculous example of over-reaching laws having effects that people can’t anticipate ahead of time, and it’s another good argument against unnecessary government intervention.

Tons of legitimate companies of the non-“adult” variety have had problems with this filter. Of a list of the 100,000 most popular websites used by people in the United Kingdom, a whooping 18-20 percent have been blocked by a minimum of one of the main Internet Service Providers. This is an astounding number, and it really shows that this filter is amounting to little more than a pain in the neck for tons of people who just want to access the web without unnecessary restrictions that do nothing but make government officials look busy.

With all of the big changes that have happened to online gambling in the UK in the past year, it’s tough to see something else affecting players in a negative way. Sooner or later, they’re going to figure out that their approach isn’t really helping anyone.
