While it’s generally noted that an expansion of gambling, like that which Spain has seen relatively recently, leads to an increase in the total number of people who exhibit problem gambling behaviors, the government wants to keep this to a minimum as much as possible. These advertising guidelines are geared towards doing just that by targeting the specific things they believe aren’t necessary for successful ads that simultaneously increase the chances of underage gambling and other problem issues.

New Law Specifics

The law in question hasn’t been passed yet, so the exact provisions haven’t been set in stone. However, they’re looking at limiting the ads that are broadcast on television and on mobile phones. They’re also seeking an outright ban on ads that they believe are targeted towards those who are under-aged, and while that sounds great on its own, it’s often something used as an excuse to limit other types of ads, particularly those with any sort of animated or graphical character element.

Responsible gambling is an important part of the industry that operators and regulators have to take very seriously. No one is doubting that there needs to be advertising regulations in place to some degree. The problem that many people have with these laws isn’t so much their original intent as how the wording of the law can be used in unforeseen ways in the future.
