Our world is usually a rather comfortable place, where you can lean your head back, relax, and not have to worry about moral questions like whether or not one person dying is worth saving ten people.

The moral question asked by Renegades, when it’s not too busy trying to show you all the beautiful, sexy women that make up the aforementioned group, is whether or not breaking the law is justified, if it means protecting the existence of a peaceful society under that law. A very interesting conundrum, and we haven’t even began talking about the slot itself!

This NextGen Gaming release offers gamblers a 5×3 playing field with 243 ways to win, a medium volatility, and a rather interesting way to structure the reels.

All symbols, from the lowest paying to the highest, can be a 1×1, 2×2 or a 3×3 icon, and at a certain size, they can trigger a small bonus which has the chance to enhance your winnings. And speaking of special feature, there’s one more you should keep an eye out – with three or more Scatters, you can win 8 free spins, which comes with a very powerful benefit of having only one renegade on the reels, rather than five, which is a more massive change than you think.

Developer

Despite being around since 1999, when online gambling was just starting to make its mark on the world, NextGen Gaming isn’t as famous as some of the other developers who came from that same time period. This is more to do with the fact that these developers have chosen to pursue a B2B, or business to business approach, rather than dealing directly with customers themselves like Microgaming and NetEnt.

As such, it’s likely you may have tried out of NextGen’s titles without even realising it. The company itself follows an ideology of attracting new users with interesting visuals and fun gameplay, providing an entertaining library of titles for their enjoyment, and retain them as long term customers.

How to play it

There’s something oddly captivating about Renegades for some reason. The graphics quality is fine, but not great – it won’t be winning any awards anytime soon, but we think it’s due to the fact that symbols can appear in so many different shapes. 1×1, 1×2, 2×1, 3×1 and any combination of the like, with the biggest possible single shape being a 3×3 mega symbol.

Alongside some basic shapes and keeping the whole square the same colour as the aforementioned shape, it can create a sort of puzzlebox feel when you first look at it, although once you get used to the visuals, it stays the same.

The gameplay is a slow affair, and we don’t mean that just because there’s a lack of any quick spin options in the menu. It’s a slow grind, as you’re spinning over and over until a large win falls into place to pull you out from the ground. From our experience, wins tend to come in streaks of two and three, and usually in a nice, big cluster before falling away back into dead spins and small wins once more.

Special Features

The first special feature included are the free spins. You need at least three or more Scatters, and you always get exactly 8 extra turns, though you can retrigger this feature to add more if you’re lucky enough. When the bonus is active, the slot will choose one of the five renegades for you, and toss the other four off the reels – making sure that only one can appear at the same time, which drastically improves your odds of winning. These free spins will be the cornerstone of winning big, so we suggest making good use of them.

Another special feature that can happen a bit more regularly are Mega Symbols. For normal paying icons, these are usually massive 3×3 symbols, but Renegades can form into mega symbols with just a 2×2 icon. Once this happens, these symbols are locked in place for a re-spin, which can be either a great medium sized win, or a total dud which rewards nothing. It’s all down to your luck.

Maximum Payouts

We didn’t have much luck with Mega Symbols in this game . However, the free spins proved to be the winning combination when it comes to Renegades. Our biggest single win was 117x our wager, and came from a lucrative free spins round that we managed to retrigger once, and get two or three big wins involved. The rest of free spins never quite reached this glory moment, but it does prove it is possible to score it.

Summary

New, interesting and requiring a bit of patience to get through it all. This slot scratched all our itches, and we’d be quite happy to come back to it and play it some more sometime. NextGen Gaming continues a relatively successful streak with their titles, even if they aren’t quite as well recognised as some other developers, which is a shame, as we feel they deserve a bit more attention.
