Tales of famous Arthurian legend captivate us to this very day. From the monarch chosen by a sword to be the next great king, to the elder sorcerer whose knowledge and wisdom ran throughout the land. The knights of the round table, the fair lady Guinevere, and the traitor Mordred.

All of these stories are popular to this day, giving way to a rather popular movie a few months ago. So it’s no surprise that if it’s good enough for the cinemas, it’s good enough for slot enthusiasts to give it a whirl. Mighty Arthur is the newest release by Quickspin, a 5×3 reel 20 payline game in which you seek out King Arthur and the old wizard Merlin to assist you in claiming the rich bounties of the land, and for those most fortunate, a free spins bonus awaits that will rock your world.

But much like King Arthur has a rival in the traitor Mordred, this slot also has some downsides that bog it down. The first and most obvious will be the clear low volatility of this Quickspin release, where your cash will bleed slowly over time until one of the bigger special features comes in to bump your winnings back up. Still, all things considered, the odds of seeing a win over 100x the wager is very rare.

Developer

Quickspin, like a great deal of betting companies, are from Sweden. A great deal of its original talent, including the senior staff, have come from big name developers such as NetEnt and Unibet, and it’s easy to see the influence these companies had on the visuals and gameplay of Quickspin.

Upon its founding, the developers committed to creating fun, innovative and high quality titles that gamblers would find fun and enjoy playing, and while not every game is a hit, titles like Supernova, Goldilocks and Big Bad Wolf show that there’s a fair bit of talent in Quickspin.

How to play it

There’s not a lot to talk about when it comes to the graphics. Mighty Arthur certainly looks nice – the animations are top notch, and the art style is captivating, but there’s little that excites us about it or makes us want to mention it to someone else. It certainly meets our high standards, but it feels like it checked off the boxes more so than it attempted to dazzle, with perhaps the exception of King Arthur making an appearance on the middle of the reel.

As for the gameplay, there’s a fair bit of mismatch in how we feel. The idea and execution, in our opinion, was very well done by Quickspin in their newest release. Mighty Arthur doesn’t pull any punches, and all three of its bonuses are very fun to experience, especially Merlin’s slow casting making more Wilds appear. But while the slot is fun to play, the low variance somewhat ruins the fun of it all, as even what the game labels as mega and super wins rarely last longer than 50 spins before you’re back in a minus once more.

Special Features

The first bonus is King Arthur himself, who can appear at random on the third reel either during normal gameplay, or while free spins are active. The symbol will expand onto neighbouring reels, becoming a 3×3 Wild that will usually net a pretty solid win.

Merlin is another special feature, but unlike Arthur, he can appear on any of the five reels during both free spins and during the base game. The Merlin symbol also acts as a Wild, but when it appears in its full 3×1 size, it can create between two to six additional Wilds on the playing field, which is a small to medium win most of the time, unless you get really lucky.

Finally, there’s the free spins bonus, activated by getting the Scatter symbols in the first, third and fifth reel at the same time, which rewards ten extra turns. While this is active, all Merlin symbols will always expand to full size and put up additional Wilds, and in our experience, a free spins special feature is a guaranteed solid win, with at least 20x your wager being won back.

Maximum Payouts

In our experience, big wins in Quickspin’s newest release are hard to come by, but the hunt for them is half the fun. The unfortunate downside is, that due to the paytable, those big wins aren’t really that big. It’s fair to say that getting a win past 100x stake is going to take a mountain of luck. Our biggest wins always came from the free spins bonus, with the highest being a 78x score.

Summary

It looks great, it plays fun, but the pays are a little dumb. We’re more used to bigger volatilities in our games, and while Mighty Arthur was a lot of fun to play, the small wins were always in the back of our mind, annoying us as we let the reels spin over and over.

The bonuses are engaging and appear often enough, and it can be fun to lose a fair bit and then pull off a miracle comeback. Our only issue is that you’re more or less always going to hover around the same amount of cash until a losing streak grabs you, and because of this, we can’t quite give it a perfect score.
