Three Card Poker Game Review

Like most casino poker games, Three Card Poker is based primarily around trying to beat a dealer who has to qualify with a minimum hand value. However, Three Card Poker is different because it uses three cards to a hand, and the hand rankings are different for this style of poker. The hand rankings are as follows starting with the strongest hand: straight flush, three of a kind, straight, flush, pair, and high card. You might want to keep that on a note card beside your computer as you play until you learn them because they are anti-intuitive if you know the standard five-card poker rankings as well.

It’s worth pointing out that this game is renamed Tri-Card Poker at Realtime Gaming-powered online casinos, but it’s the same exact game under a new name.

Three Card Poker Game Play

You start off by placing a bet called an ante. Then you’re dealt three cards face up, and the dealer is dealt three cards face down. You have the option to either fold and give up your ante, or you can call by placing an additional bet that’s equal in size to the ante. If you call, then the dealer will check to see if he qualifies by making at least queen-high. If the dealer doesn’t qualify, then your ante pays out at 1:1 and the call bet pushes. If the dealer qualifies and has a better hand than you, then you lose the ante and the call. If the dealer qualifies and you win, then your ante and call both pay out at 1:1.

Regardless of if you win or lose, then you can receive what’s called an Ante Bonus if you are dealt a flush or higher. The payouts for this vary from casino to casino.

The Pair Plus Side Bet

In addition to the ante and call bets, you can place a Pair plus side bet before the hand begins. This is a side bet that gives you payouts based on the value of the hand you’re dealt regardless of the rest of the play or whether you win or lose. The standard Pairplus payout table is 40x for a straight flush, 30x for three of a kind, 6x for a straight, 3x for a flush and 1x for a pair. Overall, it has a house advantage of about 7.3 percent, and it’s not considered a very good bet because of the relatively low payout rate of 92.7 percent.

Strategy in Three Card Poker

The correct strategy in Three Card Poker is pretty easy to learn. All you have to do is call when you have Q64-high or better, and fold when you have Q63-high or lower. Because the mathematically perfect strategy for this game is so easy to learn, it’s a good game for people to start with who are looking to get into casino poker games. This strategy gives payout rate in the 97 percent range depending on the exact paytable used for the Ante Bonus. Because there are so many pay tables used, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what the payout rate will be for you.
