The third is knowing how to play really bad hands so that you make the most out of them instead of just giving up. Playing Strong Hands Well

Most people think that there’s nothing to playing really strong hands in video poker, but that’s misguided. You actually need to know when you should break a made hand to go after a draw. Generally speaking, the only time that you’re going to break three of a kind or better is when you have four cards to make a royal flush. You should break any flush or straight if you have this type of draw. However, you should not break a king-high straight flush by discarding the nine.

Knowing What to Do With Mid-Strength Hands

If you have a high pair, meaning a pair of jacks and up, then you should only break that for four to a straight flush. With a low pair, however, you can also break it for three to a royal or four to a flush. Keep in mind that three to a royal is stronger than four to a regular flush, so if you have a choice between the two, go for the three-card draw to the royal. With that in mind, low pairs are better than straight draws because of the lower payout rate for straights and the lower chances of hitting them.

Playing Jack or Better the Worst of the Worst

Being able to make the most of high-card hands is very important to maximizing your payout rate in this game. What you really want to be able to have is two suited high cards. If you don’t have that, then you’ll want to go for two offsuit high cards. If you have three offsuit high cards, then always pick the lowest two and discard everything else. Otherwise, keep just one high card if you have it. With no high cards or other types of draws, just discard all five of your cards.
