When to Double When Playing Blackjack Surrender

The first thing you need to learn when you play this type of blackjack is when to double. You’ll be doubling with hard nines when the dealer has a three through six. You’ll also double hard tens and aces whenever the dealer’s card is lower than your total, and this includes paired fives. Soft hands worth 18 or lower are often doubled depending on the dealer’s up card as well. You’ll double soft 17 and 18 hands against three through six. Soft 15 and 16 hands are doubled against four through six, and lower soft hands are doubled against fives and sixes only.

When to Use the Surrender Option

One of the main traps that players fall into with Blackjack Surrender is using the surrender option too much. There are only a handful of specific situations when you should ever use the surrender option, and this applies no matter how many cards are in your hand since you can surrender at any point before standing or going bust. If you have a hard 16, surrender against nines, tens and aces. When you have a hard 15, you’ll stand against tens only. The exception to this is if you have a soft 18 against a dealer seven or eight, and in those cases you should stand.

With hard hands of 12 and up, stand when facing a dealer card of two through six. The only exception to this is to hit with a hard 12 against a two or three. When the dealer has two through six, you’ll tend to split low paired cards, and when the dealer has seven through ace, you’ll tend to hit instead. If you always split aces and eights, and always split nines unless facing a seven, ten or ace, then you’ll be on the right track for performing well in this game.
